Frequently Asked Questions
What age groups does BCYL serve?
Beach Cities Lacrosse offers various programs serving boys & girls in grades Pre-K-2, 2-8 and 9-12
Does my child need prior lacrosse experience?
Nope!
What equipment is needed?
Equipment required by USALacrosse to participate in full-equipment programs. Some programs are not full-equipment
Boys required equipment.
Stick. Most sticks come in the same length 40-42 inches for attackman and Middies. Long sticks are only for defensemen and Long Stick Middies
Gloves. Look for gloves that cover well beyond the wrist. Hockey gloves are not recommended, as they are typically too stiff
Helmet. Must be NOCSAE Certified. Cascade helmets are recommended. They are much more comfortable and many styles grow with the player
Shoulder pads. Look for pads that are adjustable and easy to put on and take off. A center breast protector is recommended
Arm pads. Look for pads that are adjustable and provide total coverage when combined with the shoulder pads and gloves. Flexibility is also important
Mouth piece. Brightly colored and preferably attached to the helmet
Cleats. Rubber soled, soccer style or football style cleats. No metal spikes
Protective cup. Part of their required equipment
Boys optional equipment.
Rib pads. Recommended and particularly appropriate for attackmen and middies who work between defenders
Underlayer. Thin layer of protection under pads (i.e. tshirt, wicking layer, etc.)
Girls required equipment.

Purchasing boys equipment
Buy a stick first!
We highly recommend purchasing a stick first, along some lacrosse balls. Your son can dramatically improve his initial lacrosse experience by having his own stick and developing solid stick skills. (Also see our suggested Wall Ball workouts!)
There are many sticks to choose from (heads, handles and stringing techniques), but we feel that the best option for developing young players is a Complete 2 stick from StringKing. Avoid custom sticks, with custom stringing jobs until your son is at least capable of noticing the difference. The StringKing Complete 2 stick series offers four versions for the developing youth and high school player and provide players with the easiest and most consistent path to good stickwork from the first pass and catch.
Younger Players (K-6th grade)
Because your son will continue to grow, there is no need to purchase top of the line shoulder pads, arm pads or gloves. Spend the money on his youth helmet and stick. By 7/8 grade, the level of contact increases and it will become more important to invest in more protective gear.
Starter sets are available for youth players, but be sure to look at sets that do not include a stick. Look for middle of the road gear that will fit for a few years.
Arm Pads, Gloves & Shoulder Pads: Any brand and model works. Choose shoulder pads that meet the NOCSAE performance standard ND200 to help address commotio cordis (now a requirement).
Helmet: We recommend Cascade helmets – they offer youth and larger sizes and they are adjustable. Purchase one that currently fits him now on the smallest setting.
Stick: Next to his helmet, this is the most important piece of equipment you'll buy. We recommend the String King Complete 2 Intermediate or the Complete 2 Junior, depending on the player's age. Both come pre-strung and include the shaft. Their consistency enables young players to throw with much better accuracy and confidence. Having sticks “custom strung” as a new and developing player is not worth it at this age.
Older Players (Grades 7/8)
As your son approaches high school, consider purchasing gear that he can use for a few years - slightly bigger than it needs to be and offering a higher level of protection. He'll be able to wear it into his first year or two of high school.
Arm Pads, Gloves & Shoulder Pads: Any brand and model works, but you should consider middle to higher levels of protection. Be sure to choose shoulder pads that meet the NOCSAE performance standard ND200 to help address commotio cordis. This is now a requirement.
Helmet: We recommend Cascade helmets – they are adjustable.
Stick: Other than a helmet, this is the most important piece of equipment. The String King Complete 2 Senior. is recommended. It comes pre-strung and includes the shaft. These sticks are consistent, allowing developing players to throw with much better accuracy and confidence. Having sticks “custom strung” as a new and developing player is not worth it at this age.
Does BCYL have equipment we can use?
Purchasing a stick and a full set of protective equipment is an expensive proposition, particularly before you know your child wants to continue playing. We maintain a limited amount of loaner gear for beginning players. This used gear is courtesy of Beach Cities alumni families and the short-term loaner program can be a good plan to get you through that first program and you're ready to purchase.
What is the schedule of a season?
Most seasons include two practices per week plus weekend games. Exact program schedule varies by season and age group.
Are there tryouts?
Our recreational programs are open registration. Some select tournaments/teams require tryouts or player assessments but most do not. Details are in each program description

What is your refund policy?
Considerable planning and financial commitment goes into each season. Coaches must be hired, fields rented, uniforms ordered and teams registered to compete in a league. Camps and Clinics have similar hard costs. To keep costs as low as possible, we make many arrangements in advance and must ask participants to share in this commitment.
All refund requests must be submitted in writing by sending an email to Club Administrator Michelle Pryor at mmpad7@gmail.com. A $50 processing fee will be deducted from the fees of each player/registration. Refunds usually processed after registration for program has closed. Request for refunds due to injury/illness are considered on a case-by-case basis.
PLEASE NOTE: Uniform costs are not refundable if we have already placed the order.
Refund of fees:
- Before program begins: 100% refund less $50 processing fee
- After program has begun: 50% refund less $50 processing fee
- No refund after program begins
